This word is applies to all sorts of things that could be enjoyed, appreciated, or savored. Often the object is something non-physical. For example, one product targeted at Japanese-speaking students of English makes the following invitation:
ナマのイギリス英語を味わう Enjoy live English from England!
Usage examples:
中華料理を味わう （ちゅうか を あきわう） to savor/appreciate Chinese cuisine
初夏を味わう （しょか を あじわう） to enjoy early summer
