ENOUGH FEET FORWARD

The “feet kanji” has two meanings which have no logical connection. On one hand, both the on reading of SOKU and the kun reading of ashi are contained in words that relate, in one way or another, to feet:

  • 足跡 (あしあと) footprints
  • 足音 (あしおと) footsteps
  • 早足で (はやあし で) at a quick pace
  • 蛇足 (だそく) superfluous (literally: like legs on a snake)

The other meaning of , “sufficiency” also uses the on-yomi reading of SOKU, as well as various kun readings: ta(riru), ta(su), ta(ru) and ta(shi).

  • 足し算 (たしざん) addition (mathematics)
  • 満足する (まんぞく する) to be satisfied
  • 補足 (ほそく) supplement
  • 足りる (たりる) to be sufficient
