Expressing Disappointment in Japanese

 

Wouldn’t it be great if everything always went as planned? We all know that in the real world, sometimes you crash and burn. Below are three expressions that you should be familiar with for expressing disappointment in Japanese:

 

がっかり する  

失望する (しつぼう する)

気を落とす (き を おとす)

 

 

がっかり する is the most basic word for expressing disappointment:

 

受験の結果が分かったら、がっかりしました。

Shiken no kekka ga wakattara, gakkari shimashita. 

When I found out the results of my entrance exam, I was disappointed.

失望する is a stronger expression than がっかり する. It means “to despair” or “to lose hope.”

 

田中さんは53歳で首になって、失望した。

Tanaka-san wa go-juu san-sai de kubi ni natte, shituboo shita. 

Mr. Tanaka lost hope when he was fired at the age of 53.

気を落とす means “to lose heart” or “to drop spirit.” It suggests a prolonged period of sadness.

 

彼女は仕事で失敗して気を落とした。

Kanojo wa shigoto de shippai shite ki o otoshita.

She failed at her job and is now in a slump.
