Japanese Grammar Tutorials

 

で is one of the most versatile Japanese particles. It has four major ranges of meaning, which we’ll examine in this tutorial:

Meaning 1. で  at; in 

ジムさんは三菱銀行で働いています。

Jim wa Mitsubishi Ginkoo de hataraite imasu.

Jim is working at Mitsubishi Bank.

 

このカメラはどこで買いましたか。

Kono kamera wa doko de kaimashita ka.

Where did you buy this camera?

 

森田さんは私の結婚式で歌いました。

Morita-san wa watashi no kekkonshiki de uta o utaimashita.

Miss Morita sang at my wedding ceremony. 

 

Meaning 2. で   by; for; with

 

日本語で手紙を書きました。

Nihongo de tegami o kakimashita.

I wrote a letter in Japanese. (I used the Japanese language to write a letter.) 

 

この車を十万ドルで買いました。

Kono kuruma o juuman doru de kaimashita.

I bought this car for $10,000 dollars. (I used $10,000 to buy this car.) 

 

プラスチックは石油で作ります。

Purasuchikku wa sekiyu de tsukurimasu.

Plastic is made from oil.

 

Meaning 3. で     because of; due to

 

病気で会社を休んだ。

Byooki de kaisha o yasunda.

I missed work due to illness.

 

信子さんは交通事故で遅刻しました。

Nobuko-san wa kootsuu jiko de chikoku shimashita.

Nobuko arrived late because of a traffic accident.

  

Meaning 4. で        on; at; in

 

入社してから今日で二年になる。

Nyuusha shite kara kyoo de ninen ni naru.

As of today, it has been two years since I joined the company.

 

この割引券は九月一日で切れる。

Kono waribikiken wa kugatsu tsuitachi de kireru.

This coupon expires in September.

 

生産管理課の会議は九時で終わる。

Seisan kanri-ka no kaigi wa kuji de owaru.

The production control department’s meeting ends at nine o’clock.
